Nothing takes root alone. Beneath the visible landscape, roots intertwine with soil, water, decay, and countless invisible lives. What grows does so through others. To re-root is not to return to an untouched nature, but to rediscover our place within these entanglements—to learn to dwell, make, and imagine with a world that is already alive.
Sing, Sun Shi, Zhang Yihan, and Yang Ziqing are artists, designers, and makers who live and work in Qingshan Village, Zhejiang, China. As part of a new generation of rural inhabitants, they have chosen to relocate from urban environments to the countryside, seeking different rhythms of life and ways of making.
Mountains, water, soil, and lush vegetation are more than the surroundings of their practices. They are active participants in processes of creation, shaping materials, techniques, and imaginations. Through myths, ashes, and microorganisms, the three projects explore relationships between human and more-than-human worlds, between ancient knowledge and contemporary practices, between visible forms and invisible processes of life.
