Li Lin contributed to the Department Making Matters with a talk on alternatives of shared living.
Using data on average living space per person in Germany and globally, she introduced alternative ways of inhabiting space — from Toyo Ito’s dwellings for the Tokyo Nomad Woman (1985 and 1989), to Hannes Meyer’s co-op interior (1926), and informal spatial practices in the Global South.
She posed critical questions: What do we truly need? What must we own? And can we imagine an exit from capitalism — toward a society based on the principle of the sharingt?
