Photographs by Liang Song
This series of photographs looks at the border between th urban village of Baishizhou and the theme park Window
of the World in Shenzhen. Taken from outside the park,
the images do not show its intended spectacle, but its edge conditions: walls, backsides, supporting structures, and the exposed construction of artificial mountains. Seen from thi position, the fantasy of the park begins to lose its coherence. What appears instead is a fragile seam between two urban worlds.
On one side lies the dense, ordinary fabric of everyday life;
on the other, a carefully staged landscape of replicas, images, and simulated monuments. Yet the photographs do not simply oppose the “real” city to a “fake” one. They reveal their close adjacency and uneasy dependence. The
park’s illusion is shown to rely on concrete supports, technical armatures, and hidden rear facades, while the urban village becomes the unplanned frame from which this spectacle can be read otherwise.
