What was built to last is now being dismantled. What was once a solution has become a problem.
Aggregate gathers fragments of concrete balustrades from the Corbusierhaus Berlin, removed during recent façade renovation. These pieces once formed part of a modernist housing project, carrying the promise of industrialized construction, efficiency, and permanence. Today, detached from the building, they appear as heavy remnants: no longer functional, yet not simply waste.
The exhibition stays with this condition — neither celebrating nor mourning, but looking carefully at what building materials carry, and what we lose when they are gone. Concrete is never neutral. It contains stone, sand, cement, labor, energy, memory, regulation, and violence. It binds together geological time and human ambition, postwar reconstruction and contemporary maintenance, durability and exhaustion.
These fragments ask us to slow down before matter disappears into the categories of rubble, recycling, or replacement. They are not only evidence of a building’s transformation, but witnesses to the unstable life of materials themselves: extracted, formed, painted, weathered, removed, and reassembled.
Aggregate reflects on architecture not as a finished object, but as a temporary state of matter — always held between construction and decay, care and damage, presence and disappearance.
